Neighbors continue to express concern, frustration over Algonquin pool closing for summer
Louisville Metro Government has approved $6 million to rebuild the Algonquin and Camp Taylor pools this fall. However, some people say more must be done to provide more opportunities for students to swim this summer. The Algonquin pool in Louisville, Kentucky, has been closed due to vandalism, decay, and disrepair due to the closure of the Algonquin pool for summer. Neighbors are concerned about the city's lack of amenities, culture, and affordability, as well as the cost of maintaining the pool. The mayor's office has proposed a $6 million American Rescue Plan to help fund the reconstruction of the pool and Camp Taylor, which was approved by the Metro Council this fall. The city is also looking forward to announcing details of the plan next week.

WANT THE CITY TO DO ABOUT IT. WHAT ARE THE KIDS ARE GOING TO DO NOW? AND THAT ALGONQUIN POOL IS CLOSED. YOU HAVE A LARGE COMMUNITY HERE. THEY HAVE NOWHERE TO GO SWIM. NEIGHBORS SAY THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE. THE ALGONQUIN POOL WON’T BE OPEN THIS SUMMER BECAUSE OF VANDALISM, DECAY AND DISREPAIR. CITY OFFICIALS SAY THE POOL WAS BUILT IN THE 1950S. IT’S ONE OF TWO CITY POOLS THAT’S CLOSED BECAUSE OF NEEDED RENOVATIONS. THE OTHER IS CAMP TAYLOR. THE COMMUNITY SAYS NOW IT’S TIME FOR AN UPGRADE. THE CONDITION OF ITS POOL IS INTOLERABLE. WHILE LOUISVILLE METRO GOVERNMENT HAS APPROVED $6 MILLION TO REBUILD THOSE POOLS THIS FALL, PEOPLE LIKE REVEREND JEROME SUTTON WITH THE LOUISVILLE AFRICAN AMERICAN THINK TANK SAY MORE MUST BE DONE TO PROVIDE A SAFE SPACE FOR KIDS THIS SUMMER. HE’S CALLING ON THE CITY TO MAKE PUBLIC POOLS FREE, MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR THOSE WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION AND OTHER CHANGES. WE DON’T WANT THE CITY JUST TO REPAIR THIS POOL. WE WANT THE CITY TO PUT A BOWL OVER THIS POOL, A ROOF SIMILAR TO THE ONE HERE AT THE MARY T MAHER AQUATIC CENTER IS WHAT SUTTON SAYS HE WANTS BUILT AT ALGONQUIN PARK. HE’S HOPING MONEY CAN BE INVESTED IN A SIMILAR FACILITY SO CHILDREN CAN SWIM YEAR ROUND THAT MAY. I’M NOT SAYING IT WILL, BUT VERY LIKELY THAT IT HELP KEEP SOME OF THESE KIDS OFF OF THE STREET. RIGHT. GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO DO. A STATEMENT FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE SAYS FOR TOO MANY YEARS, THE ALGONQUIN POOL DID NOT GET THE REPAIRS TO THE COMMUNITY, DESERVED. AND THIS NEGATIVELY IMPACTED THE NEIGHBORS WHO RELIED ON THAT FACILITY FOR GENERATIONS. THAT’S WHY OUR ADMINISTRATION IS SPENDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO REBUILD THE ALGONQUIN POOL. JAMI
