One Of America's Largest Urban Forests Is An Outdoor Paradise Sandwiched Between Louisville And Fort Knox - Islands
For an outdoorsy getaway close to a major city, Jefferson Memorial Park isn't too far from Louisville, Kentucky, and offers hiking, fishing, and more. Jefferson Memorial Forest, the largest nature reserve in Louisville, Kentucky, is also the largest municipally-owned urban forest in the country. Located on the southern edge of the city, it covers 6,500 acres and was dedicated as a memorial to soldiers and veterans in 1945. Initially covering just 1,500 acre, it has since grown to its current size and offers hiking trails, equestrian riding routes, a fishing lake, and recreation areas. It also serves as a sanctuary for flora and fauna, providing a safe environment for wildlife. Visitors can reach the forest from the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), with a 15-minute drive to the Welcome Center at the northern end of the park. Hiking, fishing, camping, and horseback riding can also be explored in the forest. The forest is officially designated as an official National Audububon Wildlife Refuge.
