This would be the fourth all-time meeting between Ole Miss and Louisville, with the Cardinals having a 2-1 edge. The first meeting was in 1997, the year Ole Miss won its first ever SEC West crown under former head coach Rob Evans. The Rebels won 74-70 on the road, before taking another victory over the Cardinals the following season in Oxford, by a final of 88-69. The most recent meeting between these two was in 2008, when the Rebels lost a late December matchup 77-68.

The Cardinals are now led by former Charleston head coach Pat Kelsey, hired to replace Kenny Payne who was dismissed after an abysmal two-year record of 12-52. Louisville last made the NCAA Tournament in 2019.
