Kentucky doctors highlight measles outbreak challenges
Kentucky reports 197 measles cases as doctors point to low vaccination rates and urge precautions to help prevent further spread. Kentucky health officials and doctors have warned that the measles outbreak continues to spread in the state, where there have been 197 cases reported and over 4,500 confirmed cases so far this year. This trend has been highlighted as a central challenge in slowing the spread. Dr. Mark Burns, an infectious disease physician with UofL Health, said lower vaccination rates are contributing to the outbreak. State health leaders also cited misinformation about vaccines as a factor contributing to lower rates. Dr Steven Stack, secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, said it is becoming harder to identify the source of new cases. The measles vaccine is 97% effective against measles after both doses and remains one of the most effective ways to protect against the virus.
