Novel mRNA cancer vaccine lowers risk of tumor recurrence in melanoma patients
The vaccine was custom-brewed for each patient to match their tumor A new cancer vaccine developed by drugmakers Moderna and Merck has significantly reduced the risk of melanoma patients' tumors returning two years after surgery. The vaccine, called intismeran, was custom-brewed for each patient to match their tumor and was added to a standard post-surgery treatment to reduce the risk. The study included over 1,100 people with high-risk melanoma who were given the standard follow-up therapy: Merck's immunotherapy named Keytruda. Two years later, 82% of the vaccine group were still living without a recurrence of their cancer, compared to 70% who had received the standard Keytrada. Moderna's shares dropped 18% after the study's results were made public. The company is currently consulting regulatory authorities for approval of the immunotherapy vaccine.
