Psychologists are helping LMPD on mental health runs – virtually
Louisville Metro Police has launched what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind program that allows licensed psychologists to support officers in real time as they respond to subjects dealing with mental health crises. Louisville Metro Police has initiated a pilot program that allows licensed psychologists to support officers in real time as they respond to mental health crises. The program allows officers with advanced behavioral health response training to receive guidance from a licensed psychologist who remotely views the interaction through body-worn camera audio and video. The pilot program is a partnership between LMPD, MetroSafe and Louisville-based Shelton Forensic Solutions. This move follows two high-profile fatal police shootings where the victims were reportedly experiencing mental health issues. The new pilot program aims to build on the Advanced Crisis Team's capabilities and resources by introducing virtual mental health professionals.
