What started as a single infirmary on the corner of Third and Oak Streets in 1886 has grown into more than 400 health care facilities across 31 counties in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Norton Healthcare is now Louisville's second-largest employer and one of the leading health care organizations in the region.

Here's a brief look at some key moments in the company's 138-year history.

• 1886: Norton Memorial Infirmary opens on the corner of Third and Oak streets, seeing patients for the first time. The hospital was named for Rev. John Norton, who was considered to be a "good Samaritan" by many. His wife, Mary Louise Sutton Norton, donated the proceeds from selling her house to have the hospital dedicated to his honor after he died. While this original location is no longer in use, the infirmary has grown to become what is known as Norton Hospital, now at 200 E. Chestnut St.

• 1892: Children's Free Hospital opens two years after what was then the most destructive tornado in Kentucky history ravaged Louisville and left a need for specialized medical care for children in its wake. The hospital became the 10th children’s hospital in the U.S. Over time this hospital would become Norton Children's Hospital, known today by its iconic hot air balloon logo.

• 1989: A merger between Methodist Evangelical Hospital and NKC Inc. (the former parent corporation for Norton and Kosair Children's) laid the groundwork to build the health care giant Norton Healthcare has become today. The merger took on the name Alliant Health System.

• 1998: Alliant Health System acquires four hospitals from a major national chain and rebrands as Norton Healthcare. The health care system that emerged included six major hospitals in total: Kosair Children's, Norton Audubon, Norton Hospital, Norton Southwest, Norton Spring View and Norton Suburban. Some of these hospitals would go on to take different names over the next couple of decades.

• 2009: Norton Brownsboro Hospital opens, providing medical care for the growing suburban population in eastern Jefferson County.

• 2015: Norton Healthcare spreads into Southern Indiana with the acquisition of Clark Memorial Hospital. Since then, the health care company has acquired two more hospitals across the river — Scott Memorial Health and Norton King’s Daughters’ Health.

• 2016: Norton Healthcare becomes the third-largest employer in the Louisville area with five hospitals around the Jefferson County area, a multitude of immediate care centers and other points of care. The company sees $2.1 billion in patient-care revenue from more than 2.8 million total patient visits across all facilities.

• 2021: Norton Healthcare becomes Louisville's second-largest employer based on its full-time and full-time equivalent employee count, according to data collected by Louisville Business First and shared with Greater Louisville Inc., the area chamber of commerce. Norton Healthcare has maintained its position as the second largest employer, only behind UPS, through present day.

• 2024: Norton West Louisville Hospital is set to open in November, bringing a hospital to Louisville's West End for the first time in 150 years.
