Norton Healthcare grew from one infirmary to more than 400 health care facilities. Here are some major moments in the company's history Norton Healthcare has seen significant growth in Louisville, with the first artificial kidney device being used in 1890 and the first of its type used in Louisville. The hospital's doors were opened to all children regardless of race in 1947, and in the 1950s, staff doctors stood by staff members for the opening of the hospital’s doors to non-race children. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali visited the hospital in 1966, and proceeds from the fight went to the Children’S Hospital Foundation. The company has also introduced the da Vinci robotic surgical system installed at Norton Suburban Hospital in 2009.
