CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- The Clarksville Police Department is taking steps to help adults and children with autism.
All officers in Clarksville now carry kits filled with sensory toys including stress balls, Rubix cubes, noise-canceling headphones, and fidget spinners.
The goal is to help people with autism feel more comfortable during difficult situations.
The kits also have communication boards for people who are nonverbal so they can point at the pictures on the board to tell officers where they're hurt.
"And it doesn't always have to be someone with autism," Clarksville Police Chief Nathan Walls said. "Maybe we were dealing with a child that's going through a traumatic event, and we just need something to bridge that gap and make them feel a little more comfortable."
Clarksville police officers also undergo yearly training on how to best serve those with autism.
