Paper Straws Found To Have Higher Cancer Impact Than Plastic, Metal Straws

Researchers say this is based on emissions from making, using, and disposing of straws, raising questions about eco-friendly claims. A study led by South Korea's Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment has found that paper straws have a carcinogenic impact more than six times higher than traditional plastic straws. The study compared four straw types, including plastic, paper, biodegradable plastic, and bio-based polyethylene, to their environmental and health effects from production to disposal. The researchers found that while paper straw was found to have a 6.33 times higher modeled carcinogenic effect throughout their lifecycle compared to plastic straw, it contributed twice as much to environmental acidification, which can harm soil, plants, and water sources. The findings have led to calls for a shift away from single-use straws, suggesting stores should only offer straws upon request, not default. The research could influence ongoing debates in other countries like the United States where some states have banned or restricted plastic straw.
