LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Three thoroughbred horses headed to Keeneland were killed and four others were seriously injured in a trailer crash in Bardstown Monday morning that sent the driver to a Louisville hospital.

According to the Bardstown Police Department, the crash happened on the Bluegrass Parkway, Exit 25, around 4:49 a.m. That's near U.S. 150.

The driver of a semitruck and trailer was traveling east towards Lexington when they crossed the median and westbound lanes, crashing into the embankment of the overpass, police said.

The driver was taken to a local hospital with a severe foot laceration and two head lacerations, after being cut from the truck. He was later flown to University Hospital in Louisville where he was listed as stable. Police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The trailer was carrying seven thoroughbred horses. Police said three horses were pronounced dead at the scene. The other four were sent to an animal hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Anderson County Large Animal Rescue assisted with the removal of the horses, which took about four hours, according to the Bardstown Fire Department.

According to the fire department, which also responded to the scene, the trailer "became dislodged from the king pin and ripped the cab of the truck from the frame." It took about 30 minutes to cut the driver out of the truck, the fire department said.

The crash impacted traffic on the Bluegrass Parkway for several hours. Just after 3:30 p.m., police said roads had partially reopened.

Police have not yet said what might have led to the crash.
