On April 8, 2024, the moon will completely block out the sun by passing between it and Earth in a total solar eclipse. The path of totality will stretch from Texas to Maine, cutting through southern Indiana and some portions of western Kentucky. Depending on where you view the eclipse, the viewer may see one of two types of solar eclipse: a total eclipse, where the sun will be completely covered by the moon for a few brief minutes, and in southern Indiana, some cities will experience upwards of four minutes in darkness. The only time you can remove your solar-safe glasses during the eclipse is if you are in 100% totality.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On April 8, 2024, a once-in-a-lifetime celestial phenomena will be on full display in the sky for millions of Americans.
The moon will completely block out the sun by passing between it and Earth in a total solar eclipse. Its path of totality stretches from Texas to Maine, cutting through southern Indiana and some portions of western Kentucky.
Depending on where you view the solar eclipse from, you may see one of two out of the four types of solar eclipse.
For those in the path of totality, you will experience a total solar eclipse where the sun will be completely covered by the moon for a few brief minutes. In southern Indiana, some cities will experience upwards of four minutes in darkness.
In totality, sky gazers can also see the sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually blocked by the sun's bright light.
Outside of that path, you'll get to see a partial solar eclipse, where the sun will appear as a crescent shape. You'll also see a partial eclipse before and after the totality phase for those in the path of totality.
Remember! If you plan on viewing the eclipse, you need to always keep your solar-safe glasses on to protect your vision. The only time you can take off the glasses is if you are in 100% totality, and only during the brief few minutes of totality. Before and after that, you’ll need to keep them on.
