LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The statue of Abraham Lincoln at Waterfront Park in Louisville has been restored to its original glory.

In December, the bronze top hat that sits next to the former president was stolen from the sculpture, all 40 pounds of it ripped right off.

Police still don't know who stole it, or where the hat — which cost $17,000 to replace — is now.

After insurance, Waterfront Park paid $5,000 to replace the hat. The cost came as a shock to one frequent parkgoer.

"That's $5,000 ...," Fila Cornelius said. "Did it really need to go back? No disrespect to him, I'm just saying ... $5,000?"

Park officials said there are now additional security cameras in the area where the statue sits.

The Lincoln Memorial, sculpted by artist Ed Hamilton, represents the 16th U.S. president's Kentucky roots. The memorial was dedicated in 2009 featuring a 12-foot statue of Lincoln seated on a rock looking out at the Ohio River.

An online report was filed with the Louisville Metro Police Department after the hat was stolen. Anyone with information on its whereabouts is asked to call LMPD's anonymous Crime Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department's Crime Tip Portal by clicking here.
